01/01/2022

Heroin is an addictive and destructive drug that has ruined countless lives, so it is no surprise to learn that the drug has inspired countless movies and documentaries. Some of the movies are very interesting and well-reviewed, so we thought we would round up what we believe are the best movies about heroin that you should absolutely watch. Let's get into the list:

Dying in Vein, the opiate generation (2016)

This documentary is a deeply personal look at the lives of 3 different parties affected by heroin - 1 is an addict in recovery, and one is a family grieving the loss of their son who died from heroin. It's really quite emotional and shows how heroin doesn't just affect the user but also affects everyone around them and in their lives. You can rent this movie via Vimeo for less than $5. You can stream this movie via Tubi.

Trainspotting (1996)

In this classic cult movie, Ewan McGregor plays Renton, a heroin addict living in Edinburgh, Scotland. It's a dark comedy about a heroin user trying to escape his life as an addict, but in a smart and funny way, it shows how difficult it is to escape the addiction once you've become gripped by heroin. There is definitely a dark side to this movie, but also lots of lessons to be had. Definitely give this a watch. You can stream this movie via SHOWTIME.

Beautiful Boy (2018)

This touching film stars Steve Carrell as the father of Nicolas, a teenager struggling with heroin and meth addiction. The film explores the role of friends and family in this scenario - they need to support the addict with love and care, but they also need to be hard with them to make sure they don't relapse. It's a sad film with great performances from Carrell and Timothée Chalamet as Nicolas, we highly recommend it. You can stream this movie via Prime Video.
