The term ‘family-friendly horror movie’ might sound like an oxymoron, but these types of movies do exist – not all horror movies have to involve death, blood, swearing and nudity. We wish there were more horror movies like this that the whole family could sit down and watch, as it’s quite an underappreciated genre. These types of movies are also great for introducing younger kids to the wonderful world of horror movies.
If you’re looking for a horror movie that the whole family can watch, here are some of the best options you can try:
Krampus (2015)

Krampus is a great family-friendly horror movie for two reasons; firstly, because it’s quite scary but isn’t gory, nor does it feature loads of swearing. And secondly, because it’s a Christmas-themed movie. It’s the perfect movie for Boxing Day, when everyone from the kids to the grandparents are all sat on the sofas and you need to put something on that everyone will enjoy. Todd Packer and Adam Scott bring lots of comedy to the movie too.
The Gate (1987)
You might have a hard time trying to get your kids to watch ‘The Gate’ because it’s an older movie from the 80s, but trust us when we say that it’s perfect for the whole family to enjoy – in fact, many of the classic 80s horror movies are quite good for the whole family to watch. ‘The Gate’ is about 2 boys who accidentally open a portal, allowing demons to escape. There are scares throughout the movie but no gore and very little bad language.
Gremlins (1984)
Gremlins is another great family-friendly horror movie that you could put on at Christmas – it’s not quite as Christmas-y as Krampus, but it’ll still work if you need to put something on for the family on Boxing Day. There are plenty of scares in Gremlins, but it’s more of a horror-comedy as it’s very funny at points.
Tremors (1990)
Tremors is a really fun monster movie that isn’t too scary but has enough scares and tension to keep both young and old engaged. Kevin Bacon is fantastic in it, as is Michael Gross. It’s quite a funny movie too, and because it’s a classic it’s great for the older members of the family (everyone loves a bit of nostalgia).
