The best comedy movies that you might not have heard of

If you’re a comedy fan then chances are you’ve already watched most of the popular comedy movies. Movies like Stepbrothers, Superbad, The 40 Year Old Virgin, and Anchorman probably won’t be new to you.

This list is not for people who haven’t seen those movies (seriously, if you haven’t seen those movies then go and watch them). This list is for people who have seen the popular comedy movies, and want some more “niche” suggestions. Hopefully, at least one of these comedy movies will be new to you. Let’s get into it:

The Other Guys

I understand why many people might have seen The Other Guys listed on a streaming platform and decided not to watch it, especially if you’re the type of person who doesn’t enjoy Will Ferrell comedies. But I promise you, this movie is much smarter and much funnier than any other Will Ferrell comedy I’ve seen. It’s written and directed by Adam McKay, who has since gone on to do more serious movies such as Vice and The Big Short, but is also responsible for Step Brothers. Tonally, The Other Guys sits somewhere in the middle of all of these. It has very silly moments, but also deals with some genuinely interesting themes and you’ll have to pay attention otherwise you’ll lose track of what’s going on pretty quickly. Also, Mark Wahlberg is brilliant in this.

Ali G in Da House

Fans of Borat might be a bit disappointed to learn that Ali G in Da House isn’t a mockumentary with real reactions like Sacha Baron Cohen got for his Kazakhstan character, but it’s still a very funny movie, just in a slightly different way. Again, this is a silly movie but also sort of heart-warming. Much of the fun is spotting all the famous British actors in silly roles. Fans of ‘Game of Thrones’ will get a kick out of seeing Tywin Lannister in a thong.

Pop Star: Never Stop Popping

The genre of ‘music mockumentary’ might seem quite niche, and yet we still feel that within this genre, ‘Pop Star: Never Stop Popping’ is extremely underrated. If you enjoy movies such as ‘Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story’ (which is also very funny), then this is a must-watch.

Johnny English

Mr. Bean is pretty iconic, but I think Johnny English might be Rowan Atkinson’s best character – if you’re a fan of slapstick comedy and you don’t mind something very silly, you’ll love Johnny English. This is a fantastic parody of James Bond-type spy movies, and the sequels are good too! If you’re looking for a comedy movie that the whole family can enjoy, this is a great option.
