The scariest movies ever made

Part of the issue with recommending horror movies to watch is that everyone finds different things scary and disturbing. It’s such a subjective thing that we always expect backlash to these sorts of articles.
What we will say is that it’s a good time to be a horror movie fan. Unlike other genres, we feel that some of the best horror movies ever made have actually come out in the last 10 years or so. You definitely can’t really say that about genres like comedy, where it feels like it’s been a long time since we had a genuinely great comedy at the cinemas.
Hopefully, this guide will introduce you to some horror movies that you’ve never come across before. Let’s get into it:

Sinister gets a mention because I could imagine that this movie gets overlooked by some horror movie snobs. It’s from the James Wan universe and was heavily marketed as a movie “from the studio that brought you ‘Paranormal Activity’”, but let me just be clear that this movie isn’t anything like that.

The Ritual

There’s something about movies where a group of friends goes off into the woods which just creeps me out, probably because it’s the sort of dumb thing I like to do. There are lots of movies in this sub-genre, and I think The Ritual is one of the best.

Suspiria (2018)

The original Suspiria is a classic but I wouldn’t describe it as particularly scary, more weird. However, the remake manages to be both weird and scary, and some scenes are extremely unsettling. Expect visuals that will stick with you.

The director of ‘Terrified’ went on to write and direct ‘When Evil Lurks’, which has had a lot of buzz around it recently and is definitely a great horror movie, but we’d say Terrified is scarier. Some of the visuals in this movie really stick with you, and there are some super creepy scenes.

Smile (2022)

I can understand why some people might dismiss Smile as another horror movie with a dumb gimmick, but unlike the terrible ‘Trick or Treat?’ movie which tried to make the creepy smile a thing, ‘Smile’ actually is creepy and has some scenes that we think will stick with you long after the film has ended.
