Netflix have confirmed that they were tracking the physical activity of certain Android users so they could research how to improve video quality when you’re on the go.
Some Android users were alarmed and voiced their concerns on Twitter when they noticed that Netflix was tracking their physical motion activity without explaining why. The Verge managed to conform that Netflix was using this data as part of a test to determine whether it could find a way to better optimize streaming performance when customers were on the move (walking, running or even just during the daily commute).
What do we think about this?
We think it makes sense that Netflix would want to conduct this research – after all, many people stream content on the go, and being able to stream it seamlessly will keep them at the top of the streaming world. However, perhaps they could have gone about this a bit better and made people aware that they were rolling this out before it happened.
