The Farewell is the kind of film that my grandma would love. It’s about a grandma, actually, and it has probably mostly been seen by grandmas too. But that doesn’t seem to have hampered it’s success at the box office – despite only showing at 4 theatres, the film took a higher per theatre box office average than any other film so far in 2019, including Avengers: End Game.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – that’s not a fair comparison. And you’re right, it’s not a like for like comparison at all. End Game was in over 4000 theatres. However, it had a much larger production and marketing budget, plus it was a film within an existing series (so there was an established audience). The Farewell was just a film from a fairly well know director within certain circles.
For reference, the average box office take per theatre for The Farewell was $87,833, and the average take for End Game was $76,60. The grandmas smoked Thanos.
The film was released by A24, and once again proves that these guys know what they’re doing when it comes to creating weird and low budget box office hits.
