Have you seen John Wick 3 yet? You seriously should – I’d say it’s one of the best action films I’ve ever seen, and it’s definitely one of the best cinema experiences I’ve ever had. It’s not on any streaming platforms yet but you might be able to catch it in the cinema. It reminded me of when I saw Mad Max: Fury Road for the first time – I was literally jumping out of my seat, felt every punch and gunshot like I was actually in the film.
Because the new John Wick film had such a profound impact on me, I decided to write an article about what I thought the best scenes in the film were. If it wasn’t obvious yet, this post will contain SPOILERS, so don’t read if you don’t want to be spoiled. Ready? Let’s go:

John and villain waiting in the hotel reception

Amidst all the incredible action in the film, there were some great moments of levity and genuine comedy. One of the funniest aspects of the film was the ongoing thread of the villain being a ‘fanboy’ of John Wick’s, despite also wanting to kill him. One of the best scenes in the film was when John and the villain were waiting in the lobby at the hotel, and the villain insisted on sitting uncomfortably close to John (because he was such an admirer of his). It got a great laugh with the crowd I was with at the cinema, and it really helped add some light-hearted fun to the ongoing action tension.

John throwing the knives

Although this one of the earlier action scenes in the film, it’s definitely one of my favorites. It’s basically John Wick fighting against 4 other guys in what seems to be some kind of armory, full of old fashioned pistols and knives stored in glass display cabinets. These cabinets get smashed of course, and John proceeds to start grabbing knives and throwing them at the enemies (who are retaliating). There are some awesome moments, like John clumsily holding 4 knives at once, then throwing them all in quick succession. It was a really creative and fun action scene.

John and Halle Berry with the dogs

Just when you thought the John Wick franchise couldn’t get any more outrageously badass, there is a prolonged scene (probably about 15 minutes) of Keanu Reeves and Halle Berry (who looks great I might add) killing bad guys with guns and dogs. There is a theme of dogs that runs through the entirety of the John Wick franchise – the death of a dog is what sparks John’s rampage in the first film, and in John Wick 3 its Halle Berry’s dog that gets shot. Luckily the dog survives, but the shot alone is enough to warrant an epic shootout, involving dogs biting crotches and jumping on bad guys from everywhere. Pawesome.

John against the large guy in the library

This is literally one of the first scenes in the film. John heads to the library to get some belongings out of a hidden book, and out of nowhere pops out a very large man. We learn that he is assassin who has come to kill John, so he can receive the bounty reward. What ensues reminded me of the earlier James Bond films, where he would face off with the large Jaws character. Wick has to use his cunning to overpower the giant character as he is outmatched on strength – luckily Wick makes good use of the surrounding books to defeat this guy, I won’t spoil anything but I bet John was happy he was surrounded by hardbacks.

John with the horses

This is more of a fleeting moment than a scene, but it was so badass I had to include it. As he’s on the run from yet more bad guys, John finds himself in a horse stable. He realizes that he could use the horses – not just to ride on, but also as weapons. He starts grabbing horses and smacking them to make them kick out their hind legs, aiming them towards bad guys.

John and hotel guy killing all the armored guards

I love this scene because we’ve known the hotel reception for the whole franchise of John Wick films. We’ve always known him as a quiet, reserved character, but this scene shows that he is clearly more than we first realized. He joins John in taking out some bad guys – first with hand pistols, but then by grabbing a shotgun and some explosive shells. Really cool stuff.
Even just writing this article was fun, that’s how great this film is. Go check it out!
