Ratings tracking company Nielsen reported in 2014 that the average hour of television has close to 15 minutes and 30 seconds of commercials. If calculated out over the above annual totals, both age brackets are saved from hundreds of hours of commercials every year.
Imagine how much time we used to spend watching adverts compared to what we watch now with all of the streaming we do? Crazy.
The only downside to this is that companies have had to get much more creative with their advertising techniques, which often results in more intrusive advertising elsewhere in our lives. I kinda liked watching tv and knowing when I had to leave the room because I was going to be sold to!
It’s probably even worse for the advertising companies in 2018 because of services like Netflix where you basically get absolutely zero ads (unless you watch an Adam Sandler movie).
