Stranded on a remote island in a terrible storm, two men begin to lose their grip with reality as paranoia and hallucinations take hold of their psyches.
Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) is sent to work as a wickie in an isolated lighthouse under the supervision of Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe). Soon after Winslow arrives, he becomes fascinated with a carving of a mermaid and takes it for his own. On the first night, he notices Wake behaving strangely at night.
As the storm continues, loneliness pushes the men closer and they start drinking heavily together, sharing stories and secrets, although all the while remaining adversarial. As they discover more and more about each other, Winslow begins to suspect that Wake is hiding what happened to a previous wickie who was stationed at the lighthouse, and Wake becomes more and more erratic and angry with Winslow.
Both men struggle to differentiate between hallucination and reality as isolation and paranoia drive them to darker places, leading to a dramatic and mind-bending conclusion.
Director of 'The Lighthouse'
"I start with atmosphere. My brother had an idea — a ghost running the lighthouse — that created a look and a feeling of a world in my head. Then we got the very basic strokes of a story based on a real story, about two lighthouse keepers, both named Thomas, who get stranded on their lighthouse station and one of them dies."
